Boyzone Singer Stephen Gately Dead at 33

Stephen Gately, a singer of Irish boy band Boyzone, who made headlines when his homosexuality was published a decade ago, has died during a holiday in Spain, the group says on its website. He was 33 years.

Gately "died tragically" Saturday during a visit to the island of Mallorca, the band said in a brief statement. The cause of death was not immediately clear.

Karachi, July 16: Girls outclassed boys in the Secondary School Certificate (Science) annual examinations (2009) by securing 8,257 A-1 grades as compared to 4,800 A-Is obtained by boys, though 16,718 more boys than girls sat the exams.

In all, 115,722 candidates (66,220 boys and 49,502 girls) appeared in the exam and of them, 81,066 (43,898 boys and 37,168 girls) were declared passed in different grades.

The results declared on Wednesday by the Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK) showed that the overall pass percentage dropped this year by 6.94 as it stood at 70.05 percentage points than last year's 76.99.

According to the statistics, the pass percentage of girl students was 75.08 and those of boys 66.29.

The girls also maintained their supremacy in the merit list of the examination as they clinched all the first three positions, although the second position was shared by a boy and a girl.

Two major earthquakes struck an hour and 10 minutes apart Thursday morning near the Solomon Islands in the Pacific Ocean, prompting a tsunami warning that was quickly lifted, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The first quake, with a magnitude of 7.8, struck at 9:03 a.m. (6:03 p.m. ET) at a depth of 35 km (22 miles) and an epicenter 295 km (180 miles) north-northwest of Luganville, Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu.

The second quake, with a magnitude of 7.1, struck at 10:13 a.m. (7:13 p.m. ET) at about the same depth and an epicenter of 280 km (175 miles) north-northwest of Luganville, Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu.

A third earthquake, with a moderate magnitude of 5.7, struck 35 minutes after the second in about the same location, the USGS said.

IIM-A mourns death of Nikhil Kamath an intelligent student | Nikhil Kamath

The mood was sombre at the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A) on Monday. All classes were cancelled after a first year
PGP student, Nikhil Kamath, 22, died after a week-long illness.

Only former president Abdul Kalam, who is in the city took his special sessions with PGP and PGPX students after the news of Kamath's death on early Monday morning at a private hospital, spread.

Nikhil was reported to be suffering from Thrombotic Thromocytopenic Purpura (TTP), a blood disorder which leads to rapid deterioration and multiple organ failure. According to doctors this condition may arise due to some viral infection.

Since he was admitted to Sterling Hospital with acute respiratory distress along with multiple organ failure, he was suspected of swine flu, and his samples were sent for tests. However, principal secretary, health, Ravi Saxena later told TOI that Kamath tested negative for H1N1.

At a pre-scheduled press conference, IIM-A director Sameer Barua told mediapersons, "We are extremely pained to inform you about the death of our student Nikhil. He was admitted to SAL and diagnosed to be suffering from TTP but his condition deteriorated rapidly. There was a team of five to seven specialists working on him. He was later shifted to Sterling Hospital where he succumbed early on Monday morning."

Nikhil got fever on September 22 for which he took medication and it subsided. But, it re-occurred two days later when he consulted the resident doctor on campus Kiran Desai and was asked to be quarantined.

When his condition failed to improve he was admitted to SAL Hospital where his condition further deteriorated and developed multiple-organ failure.

On Sunday night, he was transferred to Sterling Hospital where the doctor put him in isolation as Nikhil was having acute respiratory distress, high fever and multiple organ failure.

"Since he had to be put on ventilator and he presented all symptoms of swine flu, we gave him on Tamiflu and sent his blood sample for testing," said Dr Chandramauli Raval, medical director of Sterling Hospital.

The Chinese capital was shrouded in tight security and fog Wednesday when police blocked the Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City and other sights in front of a massive parade marking the 60th anniversary of the communist regime.

Many tourist attractions, hotels, restaurants and shops in downtown Beijing was already closed before the event on Thursday is expected to rival Olympic opening ceremony last year.

The Forbidden City and the Great Hall of the People, was closed, along with many businesses located in Chang An, the main street that runs east-west through the city, including the Raffles Beijing hotels, grocery stores, Starbucks coffee, the Mom and small - pop noodle places and tourist shops.

Gotthard Base Tunnel (Worlds Longest Tunnel) In Switzerland railway tunnel is under construction named Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT). The planed length of tunnel is 57 km means 35.4 miles and total length of tunnels is 153.5 km it means 95.4 miles.

It must deal with the longest tunnel in the world after completion in 2017. Jurisdiction of this was planned in 2015, but because of various delays, it was considered to be completed by 2018 in 2007. But when work began to move at a faster pace than expected, it is supposed to be finished in 2017th.

As of September 2009 nearly length of 137.3 km tunnel was excavated. The total cost of this project will be U.S. $ 6.4 billion, and at the end there will be some 200-250 trains themselves. May also be interested in the total volume of excavated rock is 26,500,000 tons.

Transit Gotthard AG is responsible for building the longest tunnel in the world and is a subsidiary of the Swiss railways.

World tourism Day

27 September was declared World Tourism Day by the United Nations in 1979. It is a day where the tourism industry worldwide celebrates the impact of the tourism sector on world economies as well as on improving the lives of people. Travel and Tourism represents some five percent of GDP of G20 countries and 27% of their services exports. This sector is more significant for the world's poorest countries where it is a mainstay of their economies, a key factor in employment and trade as well as a vital lifeline for their development.

At its Fifteenth Session in Beijing, China, in October of 2003, the Assembly decided the following geographic order to be followed for the World Tourism Day celebrations: 2006 in Europe; 2007 in South Asia; 2008 in the Americas, and 2009 in Africa.

South Africa today, celebrated World Tourism Day (WTD) in Kimberley in the Northern Cape under the theme, "Tourism: Celebrating Diversity". In her keynote address, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Ms Tokozile Xasa, said Tourism is a catalyst in driving the economic development globally and if managed well it will benefit communities and reduce poverty in line with national priorities.

Tourism is a major contributor to South Africa's gross domestic product (GDP). It contributes approximately eight percent of GDP and generates around one million jobs directly and indirectly. The economic slowdown has had a negative impact on our economy, but tourism has helped the country maintain the effects of the global recession. In 2008 South Africa held more than nine million visitors.

In Celebrating Diversity, provinces today showcased their different attractions and heritage sites through exhibitions. They included amongst others the Cradle of Human Kind from Gauteng and the Taung skull from North West.

The host province for the 2010 World Tourism Day celebrations is Limpopo.
